Animal Chinz

The up and coming local "band that can" played a great show at the Magic Bag on Friday, March 24. I had run into Zach and Mark of the band earlier in the week and talked about coming to see them and possibly recording the show. They were very excited about this idea and offered to put me on the guest list. Now, I am not trying to be biased because I know the band, but I honestly think that it will only be a matter of time before more people - or shall I say 'new fans' - are talking about this band. I was at the Magic Bag hanging back and mostly people watching, but also taking in the scene. It was a cold and snowy night, and I often found myself peering out the front doors out onto Woodward and watching the clean white snow slowly build up on the median as the passing cars broke into the white night on the black pavement. Although I was listening to the other bands that played throughout the night, I was eagerly awaiting who I had come to see. I had only seen the Animal Chinz one other time, which was for their original cd release party at the Magic Stick back in November 2005 (the Magic Bag decided to call this the bands cd release party to draw more attention to their venue). I remember being impressed, but the next few months had brought change in my life and I hadn't had a chance to see them again until now. So, needless to say I was anticipating their performance. When it was finally time and they prepared to take the stage, I made my way up to the soundboard to make any needed adjustments and get ready to document the presentation.

The lights went down, the band was introduced and the recording was under way. The band opened with Toon Inn, which is the first track on the new album, "The Real Lesson". The setlist was followed with:
Ninth Floor
My, Have You Grown?
Plans Have Changed
Crawl Across The Sky
Noon Tides
Consciousness
Baby Girl
Self Reliance
Upstream Aquatic Excercises
Nothings For Sure
It's No Matter
Opposite Ends
Israel, Palestine

I packed up my gear and walked out into the snowy night feeling positive that this band has good things coming it's way.

I would like to thank the Animal Chinz for this experience and I would suggest that you head on over to their site and check for their upcoming shows, and while you're there why not pick up "The Real Lesson"? You won't regret it.

We have ignition!

Archivist Records is a project started with a passion for my love of music. Although I do enjoy studio recordings, there is something about a live show that adds another aspect to the music. It's rehearsed, but more carefree in the sense that there really is only one take. It's raw and emotional. In the words of one of my inspirations: The band seems to say "With the lights out, it's less dangerous." While the audience chants, "Here we are now, entertain us."

Peace and light,
